What is Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio?
A studio that renamed itself after the game it makes, which tells you most of what you need to know about it.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) is Sega's internal team for the Like a Dragon series and its relatives: Judgment, Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, and the modern Super Monkey Ball games. Its name is simply the series' Japanese title, adopted once the series had become the team's whole identity.
THE LINEAGE
Four names, one teamAmusement Vision · 2000
Nagoshi's arcade-and-GameCube studio: Super Monkey Ball, F-Zero GX, SpikeOut. The bedrock staff of everything that followed.
New Entertainment R&D · 2004
On July 1, 2004, Amusement Vision folded back into Sega and absorbed the non-sports staff of Smilebit, about 124 people under Nagoshi. This is the team that built the first Yakuza.
RGG Studio · 2011
The studio unveiled its series-derived name in August 2011; the first game released under the banner was the 2012 shooter Binary Domain. From then on, the name on the box in Japan matched the name of the team.
The Yokoyama era · 2021
When Nagoshi and producer Daisuke Sato left in 2021, leadership passed to Masayoshi Yokoyama, the series' head writer since he scripted the 2005 original. The turn toward simultaneous worldwide releases and the Like a Dragon rebrand are his tenure's signatures.
HOW THEY WORK
Living citiesResearch as doctrine
For Infinite Wealth, art staff described measuring the lux, the literal brightness, of individual streetlamps in Kabukicho so Kamurocho's light would match. The studio calls its goal "creating living cities", and it shows in twenty years of the same few districts, rebuilt game after game.
Two house styles
Since 2020 the studio runs two lines in parallel: the turn-based RPG of Ichiban's main series, and the real-time brawling of Judgment and the Kiryu side stories. One studio, one city, two grammars of fighting.
