Who is Atsushi Ohkubo?

Ohkubo is a manga artist who assisted on GetBackers, debuted with B. Ichi, then built Soul Eater and Fire Force into Square Enix and Kodansha pillars.

Atsushi Ohkubo was born on September 20, 1979. He came up through the assistant route, working under Rando Ayamine on GetBackers, and won recognition in Square Enix's newcomer system, which put him in the Gangan magazines where he would spend the first half of his career.

His first series was B. Ichi, serialized from 2001 to 2002 in Monthly Shonen Gangan. It ran only four volumes, but its fingerprints are all over Soul Eater: a grinning, Halloween adjacent world, characters built around obsessions, and panel design that treats the page as a stage set. Soul Eater itself began as three one shot prologues in Gangan magazines in 2003 before serialization in 2004.

Soul Eater made his name across nine years of serialization and a hit anime, and its spin off Soul Eater NOT! ran beside its final years. After a short series, Enen no Shouboutai, published in English as Fire Force, began in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2015 and ran to 2022, eventually revealing deep connections to the Soul Eater world that reframed both series.

Ohkubo's style is graphic and architectural: heavy blacks, skewed cityscapes, fashion conscious character design and a sun and moon with faces and attitudes. He designs his worlds as strongly as his people, which is why Soul Eater's Death City and Fire Force's Tokyo empire are both instantly recognizable from a single background panel.

He is also a notable character designer beyond his own series, contributing designs to games and anime. For collectors, the Ohkubo shelf is a two series shelf with a short early work at its base, and the art books and Perfect Edition releases exist because his art, as much as his stories, is what readers collect.
