Who is Caiman, really?

One body, four names. The man Caiman is hunting is, in pieces, himself.

This page gives the answer away, because the answer is what readers ask for. Caiman wakes in the Hole with a lizard’s head, no memories, and one method: bite a sorcerer’s head, let the stranger inside his mouth look at them, and ask the only question he has. "What did the guy inside my mouth say?"

The series runs eighteen years on that question. The answer is not a single sorcerer. It is a relay of identities inside one body, and a prisoner trapped in its throat.

THE MAN INSIDE

The judge in the throat
Who he is
The face inside Caiman’s mouth belongs to Risu, once a member of the Cross-Eyes gang. Risu’s own magic, a curse that hunts its target without rest, turned him into a vengeful spirit when he died, and that spirit is what lives in Caiman now.
Why he can judge
Risu knew the face of the man he was hunting. Each sorcerer Caiman bites is shown to him, and his verdict, not him, or him, is the series’ engine. He is not measuring magic. He is recognising a person.
How he got there
In the body’s previous life, the curse closed in on its target and was trapped mid-hunt when a bottle of reptile-transformation smoke broke over the body. The lizard head grew, the curse was sealed inside, and the new person woke up blank. The curse that made Caiman’s face was an accident of someone else’s war.

THE CHAIN

Four tenants of one body
Ai
The original: a boy of the Hole named Ai Tanaka, Coleman in the English editions, who wanted more than anything to become a sorcerer, a thing his species cannot be. His hunger for magic starts everything.
Aikawa
The second life: a quiet student in the sorcerers’ world, Risu’s friend. Aikawa is the body living gently, and his friendship is the thread Risu’s curse follows home.
Kai
The third life: the boss of the Cross-Eyes, the gang of weak sorcerers at war with the En family. Kai is the body weaponised, and the man Risu was hunting when the curse struck.
Kaiman
The fourth: the blank slate Nikaido found and named, after a caiman lizard in a reptile book. Kaiman is the only tenant who chose nothing and inherited everything, which is why the story belongs to him.

THE CRAFT

How the mystery is built
Fragments, held by enemies
No character holds the whole answer. The En family, the Cross-Eyes, the doctors of the Hole and Risu each carry one true piece, and Hayashida deals the pieces out across 167 chapters like depositions in a trial.
The reader assembles it
Flashbacks in Dorohedoro are evidence, not decoration. By the final volumes the reader can state Caiman’s biography more completely than he can, and the ending turns on what he decides to do with a past that is his and not his.
