Who is Hideo Kojima?

Hideo Kojima is the game designer who created Metal Gear at Konami in 1987, directed the series for 28 years, and after a public split with Konami in 2015 founded the independent Kojima Productions, makers of Death Stranding.

Hideo Kojima joined Konami in 1986, an aspiring film maker who chose games as the available canvas, and within a year had designed Metal Gear for the MSX2, inventing stealth out of hardware limits as the stealth origins page in this shelf explains. Snatcher and Policenauts built his reputation for cinema literate adventure games in Japan, and Metal Gear Solid in 1998 made him one of the first game directors known by name to a global audience.

Across Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, 4, Peace Walker and V, Kojima's signature hardened: long cutscenes beside deep systems, fourth wall play like the Psycho Mantis memory card reading and the Mantis controller port trick, anti war and anti nuclear themes, and a fascination with language, memes in the original sense, and identity. He also produced the Zone of the Enders games and the cult handheld adventure Boktai, which shipped with a solar sensor in its cartridge.

The end at Konami was as public as corporate splits get: during The Phantom Pain's 2015 launch year, Kojima's name and studio branding were removed from packaging and marketing, his studio inside Konami was dissolved, and he was reportedly prevented from accepting the game's awards in person. He left that December and immediately re-founded Kojima Productions as an independent studio with Sony backing.

Death Stranding (2019) and its sequel proved the auteur model portable, and his studio's later announcements, including a return to action espionage, keep his name in the genre he defined. Meanwhile the series he left moved into its archival and remake era, covered on the post Kojima page in this shelf.

For collectors, Kojima is the rare director whose presence changes an object's meaning: his name on a box, removed or restored, tracked the industry's credit politics, and signed or director associated editions, from Japanese premium packages to the Death Stranding collector's sets, form a cross company shelf of their own.
