Who is Sachiko Kamimura?
Amano painted Arslan. Kamimura taught those paintings to move.
Every adaptation is a translation, and the 1991 anime’s translator was Sachiko Kamimura. Amano’s novel covers are watercolour and line, beautiful, and nearly unusable as animation models. Kamimura rebuilt the cast with cleaner silhouettes and stronger eyes while keeping Amano’s jewellery, braids, and armour, and her Arslan became the definitive 1990s version of the prince.
THE DESIGNER’S HAND
One artist, several eras of animeArslan · 1991–1995
Her designs carry all six episodes of the first anime, films and OVAs alike, even as studios and budgets changed around them.
City Hunter and Black Jack
Kamimura also served as character designer on the City Hunter and Black Jack television series, the same gift for elegant, readable faces in very different registers. (Noted in Anime News Network’s retrospective on the OVA era.)
Three Arslans, three hands
Lay the versions side by side and the franchise becomes a design history: Amano’s paintings, Kamimura’s 1991 screen designs, and Arakawa’s 2013 manga faces, three answers to the same prince.
