Who is the Laughing Man in Ghost in the Shell?

A hacker, a logo, and a crowd: the case that named the whole series.

The Laughing Man case opens Stand Alone Complex as old history: a hacker who, six years before the series, blackmailed a medical corporation live on air while hiding his face behind a rotating logo, then vanished. When the logo resurfaces in 2030, Section 9’s problem is bigger than one man: imitators, fans, and opportunists act under the symbol without any central direction, which is the phenomenon the show’s title names, a stand alone complex, coordinated behavior with no coordinator. The Complex episodes of season one follow the investigation; Production I.G compiled them into the feature-length OVA The Laughing Man, released September 23, 2005.

THE CASE FILE

What is documented
The logo
A smiling face ringed by text, designed to be reproduced: within the story it spreads like a meme years before the word was common, which is precisely the show’s point about networked symbols.
The compilation
The 2005 Laughing Man OVA re-edits the season’s Complex episodes into a single film, the format admitting on its face that the season contained a movie hiding inside a TV series.
