Who is Yoshihiro Togashi?

Yoshihiro Togashi is the manga artist behind Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter, one of Weekly Shonen Jump's defining creators of the 1990s.

Yoshihiro Togashi was born in 1966 in Yamagata and broke into Weekly Shonen Jump at the end of the 1980s with short comedy and horror work, including the series Ten de Showaru Cupid. In December 1990 Jump launched the work that made him: Yu Yu Hakusho, the story of a delinquent turned Spirit Detective, which ran to 1994 and became one of the magazine's commercial pillars alongside Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk.

Togashi's gifts and his difficulties are both documented by the work itself. He drew with a loose, expressive line that could harden into some of the most atmospheric battle art of its era, and he wrote moral arguments into his fights: the Chapter Black arc of Yu Yu Hakusho is essentially a debate about humanity staged as a tournament aftermath. At the same time, the weekly schedule ground against his health and perfectionism, and Yu Yu Hakusho's ending in 1994, abrupt by design and exhaustion alike, became a famous case in manga labor history.

After the short, strange Level E (1995 to 1997), a science fiction comedy he has called a personal favorite, he began Hunter x Hunter in 1998. It became his second masterpiece and his second long negotiation with serialization, its celebrated hiatuses driven by chronic back pain and his refusal to hand the art to assistants in the usual way. Togashi's author notes across both series, self deprecating and game obsessed, built a public persona rare for his generation of artists.

In 1999 he married Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon, manga's most famous creative marriage, and their joint doujinshi and collaborative illustrations are minor collecting legends. In 2022 Togashi opened a Twitter account to post manuscript progress photos, which promptly became one of the most followed accounts in Japan, evidence that the audience for his page by page process never left.

For this Library the point is the double legacy: Yu Yu Hakusho shows Togashi mastering the Jump formula and then bending it, and Hunter x Hunter shows what he did with the freedom that success bought. Both series' books are single author objects in a way few long runners are, which is why their editions repay close collecting attention.
