Why does Solo Leveling have a different name in Japan?

Japan localized it fully: new title, a Tokyo setting, and a hero renamed Shun Mizushino.

Japan did not import Solo Leveling so much as rebuild it. On Piccoma, Kakao's Japanese platform, where the webtoon launched on March 1, 2019 and became a flagship title, the series runs as Ore Dake Level-Up na Ken. The localization renamed Sung Jinwoo as Shun Mizushino and Cha Hae-In as Shizuku Kosaka, moved his home from Seoul to Tokyo, and renamed Jeju Island as Kanan Island, softening the original's Korea-versus-Japan edges for its new home audience.

The Japanese print edition, from Kadokawa's MFC label, began on December 21, 2019 with volumes 1 and 2 released together. Japanese volumes are smaller than the Korean books, so the same story stretches much further: the main series reached 25 volumes before completing on June 23, 2026, and a separate side-story volume followed on September 18, 2026 at ¥1,320 (about $9). The digital complete set lists at ¥25,564 (about $165) on BookLive. A Japanese set and a Korean set of the same comic therefore look nothing alike on a shelf.

The split even reaches the anime's soundtrack. The Japanese television broadcast uses the Japanese names in its voice track and credits, while the international version of the same Japanese audio keeps the Korean names, so two official versions of the Japanese dub exist. For documentation, the rule is simple: a Japanese Solo Leveling object belongs to the Mizushino version of the story, and its volume numbers never convert directly into Korean or English ones.
