Why Does Xenogears' Second Disc Tell Its Story Instead of Playing It?
For nineteen years the accepted explanation was a legend: Square cut Xenogears' budget, the money went to Final Fantasy, and the team stuffed the second half into narration because it had no choice. In 2017, director Tetsuya Takahashi gave Kotaku the first official account, and it is more specific, and less dramatic, than the legend. This page prints his version as the record, and the legend as the legend.
THE VERDICT
Takahashi's account, Tier 1Takahashi's explanation, in his own words to Kotaku at E3 2017: "Xenogears as a project was staffed pretty much entirely out of new staff members, young staff members. Back then, we had the direction of, 'All projects take two years and that's when we need to get it done.' So on top of developing the game, we had to nurture and teach and grow these younger employees. Things like 3D were extremely new, which led to some delays in the schedule. It just wasn't possible to get everything done."
As the deadline became impossible, Square's higher ups suggested ending the game after the first disc, at the escape from Solaris. Takahashi refused the amputation: "It was a rough way to end it, and I felt like if we do that, then the players will not be satisfied. So we had a proposal, I proposed that if we do disc 2 in this way that it turned out to be, we can finish the game with the current number of staff and the current time allotted for the schedule and the remaining budget we have." The narrated disc, Fei and Elly recounting events from chairs while the scenes play, was his proposal, adopted so the story could end.
His judgment since has not wavered: "I do think my decision was the right one to make. Because if we had just ended at Disc 1 it would have been bad."
WHAT THE RECORD SUPPORTS
And what it does notSupported by the account: a hard two year schedule, an inexperienced team learning new technology, real delays, and a genuine budget and staffing ceiling for whatever disc two became. The choice was constrained. It was still a choice, made by the director, between two endings Square would accept: stop at Solaris, or narrate the rest.
Not supported by any on record statement found for this page: the fan version's specifics, that Square cut Xenogears' funding mid production and redirected it to a Final Fantasy game. That claim circulates in forums and reviews as common knowledge, but no Square or Takahashi statement in the opened record says it, and Takahashi's own account names schedule, staffing, and inexperience instead. This Library labels it Tier 2, widely repeated, unverified, and prints the Tier 1 account above it.
WHAT IT COST, AND WHAT IT SAVED
The disc itselfWhat was lost is visible on the disc: major events, the world's mutation, the search for Fei, arrive as narration and montage instead of towns and dungeons, several supporting characters' threads simply stop, and the second disc's playable share is a fraction of the first's. The criticism printed at release, rushed pace, lack of gameplay, excessive narration, describes the object accurately.
What was saved is the ending of a story designed as Episode V of six: the full arc, its revelations about Fei, Elly, and the ten thousand year machine beneath the world, delivered whole. The alternative on the table was not a bigger disc two. It was no disc two.
