SOJ Jak and Daxter ยท The Silent Hero
← Back to the Library

Why doesn't Jak talk in The Precursor Legacy?

Because Naughty Dog wanted you to be Jak, not to watch him.

Jak does not speak in The Precursor Legacy, and the silence was a stated policy, not a budget accident. Director and co-founder Jason Rubin believed a silent protagonist kept players fully immersed in the character and avoided the risk of alienating them with unwanted personality traits. His prime example of that risk, named on the record, was Gex, the wisecracking gecko whose voice is the subject of another page in this gallery.

So the studio built the loudest possible partner for its silent hero, and put the entire personality budget into him.

THE ARRANGEMENT

One mute, one motormouth
The Rule
Rubin's reasoning: a hero who says nothing lets every player project themselves into him. Any fixed voice, accent, or attitude is a trait some players will dislike, and the dislike attaches to the character they are supposed to be.
The Exception
Daxter was designed as the release valve: a loquacious ottsel, inspired in part by Mushu from Mulan, voiced by Max Casella, who comments on everything Jak cannot. The pair's comedy runs on the contrast.
The Scale
The silence was maintained inside an enormous voice production: the game was recorded in six languages with 126 voice actors, including Dee Snider as the villain Gol. Everyone in the world talks except its hero.

THE REVERSAL

Jak II gives him a voice

In hindsight, the team questioned its own rule. Designer Evan Wells and programmer Greg Omi both suggested that giving Jak lines could have fueled the banter between him and Daxter that the first game performs with one hand tied.

The sequel settled the argument in practice. Jak II opens with Jak speaking, voiced by Mike Erwin, and his first words are a vow of revenge after two years of Dark Eco experiments. The darker game needed a hero who could carry a complex narrative out loud, and the silent experiment ended after exactly one game. The full story of that turn is on this shelf's second Jak page.
