Why is One Piece getting a new anime from WIT Studio?

THE ONE PIECE is a second anime adaptation of the manga, made by WIT Studio for Netflix, announced at Jump Festa '24 in December 2023 while Toei Animation's series was, and still is, on the air. Two adaptations of one manga, running at once, is close to unheard of. The reasons on record are specific, and they come from the studio president and from Oda's own thinking, not from fan guessing.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
December 17, 2023Netflix announced the remake on the second day of Jump Festa '24, timed to the anime's 25th anniversary. The series adapts the manga starting from the East Blue saga, in partnership with Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation itself. Season one, due to stream worldwide in February 2027, tells the first 50 chapters across seven episodes and about 300 minutes, opening, fittingly, with an episode titled "Romance Dawn."
THE REASON, ON RECORD
Wada, March 2026George Wada, president of WIT Studio, explained the thinking in an interview reported by Anime News Network in March 2026. The remake answers a concern of Oda's own: that Toei's anime might not reach a younger generation, because it is very long, it began many years ago, and its early episodes carry the animation of their era. WIT's response is tighter pacing without unnecessary padding, made with modern techniques, and aimed at the strength of the studio's late night work rather than a Sunday morning children's slot. Wada was equally clear about the debt: the new series is made to fully respect Toei Animation's work, not to replace it in anyone's esteem.
WHAT IT IS NOT
The other anime continuesNothing about the remake ends the original. Toei's series continues in parallel, on a new footing: from 2026 its annual output is capped at a maximum of 26 episodes, a change its producer linked to giving episodes more of the manga's content, tempo, and pacing. So the franchise's answer to a 1,100 episode mountain is not to stop climbing it. It is to build a second, shorter staircase beside it, and let a new generation start there.
