Yu-Gi-Oh! R and GX

Five volumes and nine volumes: the manga sequels that ran beside the anime era, both complete, both effectively out of print in English.

Yu-Gi-Oh! R, by Akira Ito, is the closest thing to a direct sequel Takahashi's original ever received. Serialized in V Jump from 2004 to 2007 and supervised from Takahashi's own circle, it brings Yugi and his friends back against the heirs of Pegasus and the Wicked Gods, dark counterparts to the Egyptian God Cards. The English edition is five volumes from Viz, 9781421530062 to 9781421530109, published 2009 to 2010. The Japanese volume one is 9784088738222, a checksum verified 978 conversion whose circulating alternative form fails the checksum and was rejected in the census.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, by Naoyuki Kageyama, ran in V Jump from 2005 to 2011 and fills nine volumes, English 9781421513782 to 9781421542126, Viz 2007 to 2012. It shares the Duel Academy setting and cast names with the GX anime but tells its own story, darker in its later arcs, built around the planet series cards and a threat the anime never used. Readers who know only the anime are reading a different work with familiar faces. The Japanese volume one is 9784088742861, again a verified conversion with a failed checksum variant rejected and disclosed.

Both series share an honest print status in the census: unknown, and effectively discontinued. No English reprint or omnibus was found for either. Digital editions remain active on Viz, but the physical English volumes are a secondhand market only, and complete sets of GX in particular require patience.

The pair also mark a structural turn in the franchise. R closes the original generation's story; GX begins the pattern every later Yu-Gi-Oh! manga follows, a V Jump series running parallel to an anime, free to diverge from it, and usually more tightly plotted for being shorter.

For a collector the identifiers above are the set check: five R volumes and nine GX volumes, each verifiable against its Viz volume one and final volume ISBNs recorded here and in the census.
