Zelda manga: The Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass

Japanese Game Boy Advance box art for The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
The Japanese GBA box art for The Minish Cap — the first of the two games covered here, ahead of Phantom Hourglass.
9781421523347 and 9781421537245: the second number is the famous break in the sequence, and it is correct.

The Minish Cap is a single volume Himekawa manga, Viz series volume 8, published December 1, 2009, at 9781421523347. Its Japanese edition, Shogakukan 9784091401168, was converted deterministically from its ISBN-10 and checksum verified, as disclosed in the census record. The story follows Link and the talking cap Ezlo into the world of the Minish, and it is the gentlest of the run, a small scale quest played for wonder.

Phantom Hourglass is likewise a single volume, Viz series volume 10, published September 7, 2010, at 9781421537245, Japanese edition 9784091496096. It adapts the Nintendo DS sea adventure with Linebeck, the cowardly captain Himekawa turns into one of the manga's best supporting characters. Volume 10's number deserves its warning, repeated from the hub page: the English ISBN is 9781421537245, NOT the 9781421523361 that the volumes 1 to 9 sequence suggests. The census verified the real number from multiple distributor and catalogue listings, and a seller or database showing the sequential number is showing a number no copy carries.

The two volumes share a Legendary Edition: The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass, Legendary Edition, 9781421589626, published May 9, 2017, collecting both, and included in the Legendary Edition Box Set, 9781974718191. The Japanese combined kanzenban counterpart is recorded at 9784091421494.

Phantom Hourglass was the last volume of the original Viz run, which makes this pair the end of an era in the bibliography: ten volumes, 2008 to 2010, after which English Zelda manga paused for six years until the Legendary Editions and Twilight Princess rebuilt the shelf.

Together the pair also demonstrates why this Library verifies identifiers instead of pattern matching them. Nine volumes taught every database a sequence, and the tenth broke it. The break is documented here so that the correct, surprising number is the one a buyer trusts.
