Can you read The Twelve Kingdoms in English?
Yes, and for the first time, all of it is actually coming.
English readers have had the series twice. Tokyopop acquired the novels in 2006 for its Pop Fiction line and published the first four books, hardcover first, between 2007 and 2010, before the license expired and reverted to Kodansha with most of the series untranslated. For fifteen years the English shelf simply stopped at book four.
The second chance is bigger. Seven Seas announced a new translation on November 20, 2024, under its Airship imprint: fifteen paperback volumes planned, in an order settled in consultation with Ono herself, with Yamada’s art on the covers. The first volume appeared on July 1, 2025.
THE TOKYOPOP YEARS
Pop Fiction, 2007 to 2010THE FOUR
Sea of Shadow (March 2007), Sea of Wind (March 2008), The Vast Spread of the Seas (March 2009), and Skies of Dawn (hardcover March 2010, paperback November 2010). Hardcover first, paperback roughly a year behind: first editions of the English line are the hardcovers.
THE STOP
After the fourth book the license lapsed and reverted to Kodansha. The Aspiring Wings and everything after it stayed untranslated, and Tokyopop’s four became the whole English series for a decade and a half.
THE SEVEN SEAS RETURN
Airship imprint, from July 2025THE TEAM
A new translation by Kim Morrissey with adaptation by Monica Sullivan, per the publisher’s retail listings: the series retranslated from the start, not patched from the Tokyopop text.
THE ORDER
Fifteen volumes are planned, and the sequence differs from Japanese publication with the author’s agreement: The Birds of Hisho is Book 7 and The Aspiring Wings Book 8.
THE SCHEDULE
Book 1, Sea of Shadow Part 1, July 1, 2025; Book 2, October 14, 2025; Book 3, Sea of Wind, December 2, 2025; then Sea God in the East and the two Sky at Dawn volumes through September 2026; Book 7 in November 2026, Book 8 in February 2027, Book 9 in May 2027.
