The Twelve Kingdoms Novel Gallery

One painter, two publishers, thirty-five years of covers.

The Twelve Kingdoms has had exactly one illustrator. Akihiro Yamada painted the covers when the novels were Kodansha paperbacks for girls in 1992, and he painted them again, from scratch, when Shinchosha rebuilt the series as a literary complete edition twenty years later. This gallery shows what can be verified from the publishers themselves: the 1992 White Heart first volume, preserved in the series’ reference record, and the complete Shinchosha cover line, taken from Shinchosha’s own book pages.

The rest of the Kodansha run is documented in text below rather than pictured. Neither publisher serves those 1990s covers today, and the standard book databases carry no images for them, so the house rule holds: a cover is shown when its source is solid, and written down honestly when it is not.

Shadow of the Moon, Sea of Shadow, volume 1

Yamada, twice
Kodansha X Bunko White Heart cover of Shadow of the Moon, Sea of Shadow volume 1, 1992: Akihiro Yamada’s painted Youko among carved stone beasts, the white heart colophon in the top corner
Kodansha X Bunko White Heart, 1992. The first Twelve Kingdoms cover: Youko among the carved stone of the Yellow Sea, the little white heart of the label printed at the corner of the painting.
Shinchosha cover of Shadow of the Moon, Sea of Shadow volume 1: the red-haired Youko holding a sword among dark carved stone beasts
Shinchō Bunko, 2012. Twenty years later Yamada repainted the same threshold moment for the complete edition: the red hair, the sword, the watching stone.

For the 2012 restoration the old art was not reused or touched up. Every Shinchosha cover is a new painting, and Shinchosha’s own edition notes record five newly drawn illustrations inside each volume as well. The two covers above are the same book opening the same series, separated by two decades of one artist’s life.

THE KODANSHA RUN, DOCUMENTED

Sixteen volumes, 1992 to 2001
THE WHITE HEART VOLUMES
Sea of Shadow (2 vols, 1992), Sea of Wind (2 vols, 1993), Sea God in the East (1994), A Thousand Miles of Wind (2 vols, 1994), The Aspiring Wings (1996), The Shore at Twilight (2 vols, 2001), The Dream of Prosperity (2001). All Kodansha X Bunko White Heart, all with Yamada covers, ISBNs in the 4-06-255 range.
WHY ONLY ONE IS PICTURED
The first volume’s cover survives in the series’ reference record; the rest are served by no publisher source and carried by no book database checked. They are catalogued here in text, the house’s honest pattern, rather than illustrated with borrowed marketplace photos.
THE YEARS WITHOUT PICTURES
Japanese booksellers who have chronicled the editions record that when the novels later passed into a plain Kodansha Bunko edition, Yamada’s covers and illustrations were dropped entirely. The art returned only with Shinchosha in 2012.
