Who is Akihiro Yamada?
Two of Japanese fantasy’s defining worlds wear the same man’s brushwork.
Akihiro Yamada, born February 10, 1957 in Kōchi and based in Kyoto, is the illustrator of the Record of Lodoss War novels and, since 1992, of every Twelve Kingdoms book ever printed. His reference biographies describe a style of delicate images reminiscent of suiboku, Japanese ink wash: restraint and atmosphere where other fantasy art reaches for armor and glare. He won the Seiun Award for Best Artist in 1996.
SOJ’s Lodoss shelf already documents his other great world. This page is the second half of that story: the painter as a novel series’ lifelong collaborator, still painting its covers at sixty-nine for a book released in September 2026.
THE HAND
Kōchi, Kyoto, inkTHE DEBUT · 1981
His first comic, Padan Padan, appeared in Monthly OUT in 1981. Manga, game design, film concept work, and novel illustration followed in parallel for four decades.
THE STYLE
Ink-wash delicacy under full color: mist, distance, and figures held at a painterly remove. It is why the Twelve Kingdoms covers read as landscapes with people in them, rather than portraits with scenery behind.
THE PRIZE · 1996
The Seiun Award for Best Artist, Japan’s science-fiction and fantasy community’s own honor, awarded in the middle of the White Heart years.
THE TWO GREAT WORLDS
Lodoss and the KingdomsLODOSS
Yamada illustrated Ryo Mizuno’s Record of Lodoss War novels and drew his own Lodoss manga, The Lady of Pharis, in 1991. For most Japanese fantasy readers, his is the face of the genre’s founding world.
THE KINGDOMS
Every cover and interior illustration since 1992, across two publishers and three decades, including the complete repainting of the line for Shinchosha in 2012. He also supplied the character-design draft for the 2002 anime, and his art-book literature credits him with its home-video cover illustrations.
THE WIDER DESK
Character-design draft for RahXephon; game design work on Front Mission 3, Mystic Ark, and Saiyuki: Journey West; concept design for the 2005 film Shinobi: Heart Under Blade.
THE PAINTER, HONORED
2026
THE NEWEST COVER · 2026
The Shore of the Netherworld, September 2026: Yamada’s newest Twelve Kingdoms painting, thirty-four years after his first.
THE ART BOOKS · NOV 12, 2026
Shinchosha publishes two collections of his Twelve Kingdoms art, Kuon no Niwa and Seiyō no Kyoku, at ¥3,630 (about $23) each, gathering the covers and illustrations of the complete edition.
THE EXHIBITION
In September 2026 the Maruzen Marunouchi gallery exhibited the original art for the new book: the covers of a paperback series, hung as paintings in their own right.
