The Tellius Games

A mercenary, not a prince, and the most political war the series has written.

Tellius is the GameCube and Wii continent: Path of Radiance (2005) and its direct sequel Radiant Dawn (2007). Between them sits the series' deepest treatment of race and empire: the human beorc and the shapeshifting laguz, nations built on each other's subjugation, and a goddess sleeping inside a medallion, the Fire Emblem of this world.

THE TWO GAMES

North American box art of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for GameCube
Path of Radiance · GameCube · April 20, 2005
Ike of the Greil Mercenaries, the series' first common-born lord, fights Daein's invasion of Crimea and uncovers the machinery of hatred behind it. The first 3D mainline game, and a return to home consoles. Its making, its cut Maniac difficulty, and its reception are documented on its own history shelf in this archive.
Radiant Dawn · Wii · February 22, 2007
The sequel, a few years on: Micaiah and the Dawn Brigade resist an occupying army in the first act, and the war widens until every Tellius army the player has ever commanded is on the field at once. Multiple viewpoints, a third tier of class promotion, and a clear save carried over from Path of Radiance for bonuses. North America followed in 2007 and Europe in 2008.

WHY TELLIUS STANDS APART

The console diptych

Tellius is the series' world-building peak. The laguz nations, bird, beast, and dragon tribes with their own politics, make the standard Fire Emblem map of kingdoms into a map of species, and both games keep asking who pays for whose freedom. Senri Kita's character art, documented on the art shelf, gives the two games a painted, heraldic look unlike anything before or since.

It is also a commercial hinge. Path of Radiance arrived late in the GameCube's life and sold well enough, provided a late boost, and reaffirmed Nintendo's faith in the series, per the series' documented history. Radiant Dawn's difficulty and the DS remakes' softer sales opened the lean years that ended, eventually, in Awakening's ultimatum.
