How Is the American Valkyrie Profile Different from the Japanese One?

America did not just translate the 1999 game. It improved parts of it, edited small pieces of it, and then the PSP port quietly took the improvements away.

The documented comparison between the Japanese and English PlayStation releases of Valkyrie Profile rests on the release record summarized below. Every item is a version content difference recorded in the sources opened for this page, not community lore. A note on scope: the same homework was run for Silmeria, and no documented version content comparison for it cleared this archive's standard, so this page covers the original only. Its absence is recorded in the staging notes, not filled with forum claims.

WHAT AMERICA ADDED

Documented improvements to the English release
MORE CINEMATICS
Several improvements were made to the English release, including more cinematics than the Japanese version carried.
ARMOR FOR THE WHOLE PARTY
The English version lets the player adjust the armor of all characters. The Japanese version allowed adjusting only the active party's armor.
A WEAPON CHANGE NOTICE
The English version informs the player when Lenneth's weapon changes between sword and bow, a real distinction, since her special attack, Nibelung Valesti, changes with the weapon.

WHAT AMERICA EDITED

Documented localization changes

Some editing occurred during translation, but the record is specific about how light it was: visible blood, drinking, and sexual comments remain in the English version. The documented cut is small and oddly precise. The archer Badrach's smoking was cut, yet the animation of him smoking after a successful battle remains in the game, minus the cigarette.

One more documented difference is a swap rather than a cut. The names of Frei and Freya were reversed in localization: in Norse mythology and in the Japanese version, Frei is the elder, and male; the English version's arrangement of the two names does not match either source.

THE PORT REVERSAL

What Lenneth did with all this

The strangest documented turn comes in 2006. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, the PSP port, was made from the Japanese PlayStation version, so the gameplay improvements and changes made for the English release, the armor adjustment and its companions, are not present in the port. But the additional cinematics the English version gained are present, and full motion video replaces all of the original's anime scenes. The English Lenneth release then layered the localization back on top: an enhanced version of the original English script, the original English voice track reused, and new voice recording by New Generation Pictures for the CG movies. An American player who upgraded from PlayStation to PSP in 2006 was, underneath the English words, playing the Japanese build.
