In what order should you play the Trails games?
Trails is written as one novel published in instalments, so the intended order is simply the Japanese release order: Sky, Sky SC, Sky the 3rd, Zero, Azure, Cold Steel I–IV, Reverie, Daybreak, Daybreak II, Beyond the Horizon. Later games assume earlier ones constantly, not just plot points but people: a shopkeeper's niece in game two is a party member in game nine, and the series expects you to remember her. Two structural warnings matter more than any list. First, Zero and Azure run parallel to Cold Steel I and II and each pair spoils the other's late revelations, so play Crossbell first, as released. Second, from Cold Steel III onward the games stop onboarding: Reverie is unplayable without both Crossbell and Erebonia behind you.
If thirteen games is too steep a door, there are two honest side entrances. The 2025 remake of the first game (Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter) is now the smoothest start of all. And Trails Through Daybreak was built as the second half's fresh beginning, a new country, a new cast, a new battle system, though even it cashes cheques written in Crossbell. What you cannot do is start at Cold Steel III: fans who try describe it as opening a novel at page 900. Falcom prints the reading order on the tin; the only real choice is whether to begin at the novel's first page or its second volume.
