The Ranma ½ Remake

MAPPA’s remake is the faithful pass: twelve episodes a year, the manga adapted straight, with the voices of 1989 back in the booth.

The remake premiered on October 6, 2024 on Nippon Television, streaming worldwide on Netflix. It is produced by MAPPA and directed by Konosuke Uda, with series composition by Kimiko Ueno, character designs by Hiromi Taniguchi and music by Kaoru Wada. Season one ran twelve episodes to December 22, 2024; season two ran twelve more from October 5 to December 21, 2025; a third season began on October 4, 2026. Much of the 1989 anime’s principal voice cast returned to their roles.

The contrast with the Deen series is the point of the exercise. The 1989 adaptation expanded, rearranged and improvised across 161 episodes; the remake adapts the manga in order and at speed, its first two seasons cover roughly the manga’s first hundred chapters with no filler at all.
