What is the Eternal Sphere twist in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time?
Till the End of Time (PlayStation 2, February 27, 2003; the West received the 2004 Director’s Cut) is set in S.D. 772, four hundred years after The Second Story. Its galaxy runs on symbology, treated in-universe as a science, and on symbological genetics, the forbidden art of writing powers into DNA. Three altered young people hold the keys to the plot: Fayt Leingod, given Destruction; Maria Traydor, given Alteration; and Sophia Esteed, given Connection. When beings called Executioners begin erasing worlds, the three powers together open the Time Gate, and the party steps through it into 4D space.
What they find there is the twist: their entire universe is the Eternal Sphere, a vast simulated cosmos run as an online game for the inhabitants of 4D space by the Sphere Company. Its owner, Luther Lansfeld, regards the party’s hacked-in powers as corruption in his system, and the Executioners are his deletion tools, sent to wipe the anomalies. The game’s final argument is not about the reveal but about the response: Luther moves to delete the Eternal Sphere entirely, the party fights him in his own dimension, and the universe endures, its people choosing to live as real whatever their origin.
