Tales on Screen: The Anime Adaptations
Six of the mothership worlds made it to animation, as faithful retellings, loose riffs, and one theatrical prequel.
The games’ anime life runs parallel to the whole series: the first adaptation aired in 2001, the most recent in 2022. Almost every mothership world of the PS1 and PS2 eras received one, and the forms tell the era’s story, television series when TV was king, OVAs when collectors were, streaming specials in the mobile years. Manga adaptations and audio dramas exist for most titles besides; this page covers the animation.
THE FIRST WAVE
2001 to 2006Tales of Eternia: The Animation (2001)
Thirteen television episodes, the game’s four leads, and a largely original island story, an adaptation in name and cast more than in plot. It set the early pattern: the anime as a companion piece, not a substitute.
Tales of Phantasia: The Animation (2004–2006)
A four-part OVA, nine years after the game, narrowing the story to Dhaos, the Tree of Life and the elves. Beautiful and partial by design, the OVA era’s economics in a single release schedule.
Tales of Symphonia: The Animation (2007–2012)
ufotable’s three OVA arcs, Sylvarant, Tethe’alla, and the World Integration chapter, retold the whole game across eleven episodes and five years. The most complete of the early adaptations, and the studio’s audition for the franchise’s future.
THE FULL RETELLINGS
2008 to 2017Tales of the Abyss (2008–2009)
Sunrise’s 26-episode television series covered the game’s full plot, subplots trimmed and merged, with most of the game cast returning. For years it was the easiest legal way to experience the Abyss story without a PS2, Bandai Namco later posted it on the series’ official YouTube channel.
Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike (2009)
The series’ only theatrical film is a prequel: Yuri and Flynn’s days as Imperial Knights, before the game begins. Released in Japanese cinemas on October 3, 2009, and in North America in 2012, it remains the franchise’s single trip to the big screen.
Zestiria, twice (2014, 2016–17)
Zestiria received two adaptations: Dawn of the Shepherd, a ufotable television special covering the opening, shipped, unusually, on the game disc itself, and Tales of Zestiria the X, the full 26-episode ufotable series, which folds two Berseria episodes into its run.
THE MOBILE SPECIALS
The small screen eraCrestoria and Luminaria
The mobile generation got prologues instead of series: Tales of Crestoria: The Wake of Sin, a short special released with the game in 2020, and Tales of Luminaria: The Fateful Crossroad, a 2022 web anime. Both now outlive the games they introduced, the preservation problem of the mobile era, in miniature.
The paper shelf
Nearly every mothership title also carries manga adaptations, novelizations and drama CDs in Japan, a print ecosystem far larger than the West’s licensed slice of it. The anime are the visible tip; the archive underneath is one of the series’ great untranslated bodies of work.
