The Mobile Era: Link, Asteria, Rays, and the Shutdowns
For a decade, Tales also lived on phones, crossover games that gathered every hero in the series, and then, one by one, went dark.
The mobile line began on Japanese feature phones in 2004 and grew into the series’ second stage: original stories and all-series crossovers that ran beside the motherships. It also became the series’ preservation lesson. A cartridge can be re-shelved; a server cannot. Every date below is a life span.
THE SMARTPHONE CROSSOVERS
2011 to 2023Tales of Link (2014–2018)
A puzzle-RPG crossover launched March 3, 2014, reaching the West in April 2016. Its servers closed March 28, 2018, the first of the modern mobile titles to go, four years after launch.
Tales of Asteria (2014–2023)
The long runner: launched April 4, 2014, and closed May 18, 2023, nine years of original crossover story arcs, outliving two console generations. Its shutdown ended the longest continuous Tales narrative ever published, and it exists now only in recordings and archives.
The feature-phone ancestors
Before smartphones, Team Tales of Mobile shipped a whole shadow series to Japanese handsets: Tales of Tactics (2004), Breaker (2005, the series’ first solo female protagonist), Commons (2005), Wahrheit (2006) and more, original mothership-adjacent games almost no one outside Japan ever played.
RAYS: THE FULL ARC
2017 to 2024The ambitious one
Tales of the Rays (February 28, 2017) was built as a mothership in mobile form: an original world, Tir Na Nog, a proper LMBS-style battle system, and a roster that eventually passed two hundred characters. The global version launched in July 2017, and closed on May 29, 2018, inside a year.
The Japanese run
In Japan the game completed its story and closed on July 23, 2024, after 2,703 days, seven years and five months. Bandai Namco marked the end with a finale campaign, a memorial art book, and something no other Tales mobile title received: an official offline version, preserving the scenario logs, battles and encyclopedia for the players who had been there.
The last two
Tales of Crestoria (July 15, 2020) closed February 7, 2022; Tales of Luminaria (November 2021), a 21-protagonist ensemble piece, closed July 19, 2022, inside eight months. With Rays gone in 2024, no Tales mobile game remains in service, the era is closed, and documentable.
