Fujishima and Inomata: The Two Hands of Tales
For twenty years the series had two house artists, and you can tell which one drew a game from across the room.
Kosuke Fujishima, the Oh My Goddess! and Sakura Wars artist, and Mutsumi Inomata, of Windaria and Utsunomiko, divided the mothership line between them from 1995. Fujishima’s line is clean, bright, mechanical-designer precise; Inomata’s is painterly, flowing, fashion-magazine romantic. The alternation gave one series two visual dialects.
THE TWO DIALECTS
Who drew whatFujishima’s shelf
Phantasia (1995), Symphonia (2003) and the Abyss (2005) carry Fujishima’s credit, the crisp uniforms, the confident smiles, the machinery that looks engineered rather than imagined. His heroes read as a team portrait; his villains keep their dignity.
Inomata’s shelf
Destiny (1997), Eternia (2000), Destiny 2 (2002), Rebirth (2004) and Innocence (2007) are Inomata’s, watercolour hair, layered costume, eyes that carry scenes by themselves. Her designs made Leon Magnus an icon and Destiny’s cast the series’ most redrawn.
Reading a cover blind
The party trick works because the split was contractual, not occasional: each mothership title belonged to one hand. Collectors shelve the series in two interleaved runs without ever being told to.
THE TEAM-UP AND THE BENCH
2011 onwardXillia: both names on one box
Xillia (2011) was the first mothership title to combine them: Fujishima designed Jude, Inomata designed Milla, and the cast visibly splits into two artistic families sharing one game, the 15th anniversary’s whole idea in a single credit.
The bench widens
Daigo Okumura, designer of the Tempest cast, drew Xillia 2’s new characters, and Minoru Iwamoto rose from the design bench to lead Arise’s art direction. Zestiria and Berseria spread the credit across all four names: the two-house system became a studio system.
In memory
Mutsumi Inomata died in 2024. The tributes at that year’s Tales of Festival, and the producer’s public message alongside them, marked what the credits already showed: half the series’ faces are hers.
