Trails in the Sky the 3rd: the book of doors
Trails in the Sky the 3rd (Japan, 2007) closes the Liberl arc by changing its protagonist: Kevin Graham, the cheerful priest of the first two games, is revealed as a Dominion of the Septian Church's Gralsritter and sent into Phantasma, a dimension that reconstructs people and places from memory, including memories Kevin has spent the whole trilogy refusing to face. Around that confessional core, Falcom arranged the game's famous structure: a series of sealed Doors, each opening a self-contained vignette about the trilogy's cast.
Those vignettes are why no series guide lets you skip this game. The Doors quietly introduce or deepen threads that pay off two, three and four games later, among them the first substantial account of Crossbell's recent history, early sightings of characters who anchor the Erebonia arc, and "Star Door 15," a harrowing backstory for a young member of the cast that recontextualises her role across the entire saga. XSEED released the 3rd in English in May 2017, for PC only, the PSP version never crossed over, completing the trilogy in the West a full decade after Japan. In structure it is also the template Falcom would reuse for Trails into Reverie: a capstone that looks backward and forward at once.
