Trails Through Daybreak: the Calvard arc begins

A new republic, a fixer who takes the jobs nobody respectable will, and the saga's second half.

Trails Through Daybreak (Kuro no Kiseki) was released in Japan in September 2021 for PS4, moving the saga east to the Calvard Republic, a multicultural, immigration-shaped nation unlike any the series had visited, and a half-century further into Zemuria's orbal age. Its lead is the series' first adult protagonist: Van Arkride, a "spriggan," part detective, part bounty hunter, part cleaner, hired by schoolgirl Agnès Claudel to recover eight Genesis devices tied to her great-grandfather's legacy and to an apocalyptic mystery. Falcom framed the game explicitly as the start of the series' second half, and rebuilt the machinery to match: a new in-house engine, seamless exploration, and a hybrid battle system letting players fight in real time or drop into the series' traditional command battles at will, plus an alignment system, Law, Gray, Chaos, tracking Van's choices.

Trails Through Daybreak II followed in Japan in September 2022, deepening the Genesis mystery through a looping, fractured year in the capital. NIS America brought the first game West in July 2024 and the second in February 2025. The arc's third game, and the door to the finale, is Trails Beyond the Horizon.
