What Are Sealstones in Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria?

Stones that rewrite the rules of the ground they sit on, and that punish you for simply carrying them out of the room.

Sealstones are the dungeon system of Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria: items with special effects, found on daises and in shells inside dungeons, that change what is true in the space around them. The game's own manual documents how they work, and this page follows the manual and the documented gameplay record. Placed well, a sealstone is a weapon. Placed badly, or carried carelessly, it is a liability that follows you.

THE SYSTEM IN FOUR PARTS

Per the game's manual and documented gameplay
1. ON A DAIS, IT GOVERNS
A sealstone placed on a dais affects enemies within that dais's area of influence, and daises extend the range of other sealstones. The manual puts it in terms of earth veins: daises are connected to them, which is why their effects radiate. A stone on a dais is a law for that ground.
2. IN HAND, IT COVERS THE PARTY
If Alicia carries a sealstone, its effect applies to the whole party. Enemies play by the same rules: if an enemy possesses a sealstone, it affects that enemy party and no one else. Every stone in a dungeon is in play somewhere, for someone.
3. IN A SHELL, IT SLEEPS
A sealstone placed in a shell has its effect negated completely. Shells are not connected to the earth veins, so area effects do not activate. A shell is how you park a dangerous stone safely, or take an enemy's advantage off the board without carrying it yourself.
4. AT A SPRING, IT TRAVELS
Sealstones normally return to their original places when the party leaves a dungeon. Restoring a stone at a spring, at the cost of magic crystals, changes that: a restored sealstone can be equipped again from any spring, in any dungeon. The manual's advice is direct: use the springs wisely, and even distant dungeons become less dangerous.

WHY IT MATTERS

The dungeon as an argument

Read together, the four placements turn every dungeon into an argument about its own rules. The stones you find are not equipment in the usual sense; they are conditions. Moving one from a dais to a shell can switch off the effect that was protecting a corridor. Carrying one trades a party wide benefit against the loss of the area effect it was exerting. Restoring one is a small investment of magic crystals that converts a local accident of the dungeon into a tool you own for the rest of the game.

It is also the clearest single example of how Silmeria differs from its predecessor. The first game's dungeons ran against a clock of periods; Silmeria removed the clock entirely and put its pressure here instead, into space rather than time: not how long you may stay, but what the ground does to you while you are on it.
