What are the Cloths in Saint Seiya?

Eighty-eight constellations, eighty-eight suits of armour, one design idea strong enough to carry forty years of toys.

A Cloth (Seii, “holy garment”) is the armour of Athena’s Saints. There are eighty-eight Saints, one for each of the eighty-eight constellations recognised by modern astronomy, and each Cloth is keyed to its wearer’s guardian constellation. The ranks run Bronze, Silver and Gold: at the summit, the twelve Gold Saints of the zodiac, each guarding one temple of the Sanctuary.

THE PEGASUS CLOTHA Cloth is armor that shifts between a wearable suit and a constellation-shaped object form, shown here on Bandai's Saint Cloth Myth EX Pegasus Seiya.

THE DESIGN SYSTEM

Why it works
Constellation as character sheet
The system gives every fighter an instant identity: a sign, an animal or myth, a silhouette, a colour. Kurumada could introduce a Gold Saint in one panel and the reader already knew his name, rank and emblem. It is character design as heraldry.
The Object form
Off the body, a Cloth assembles into its constellation’s shape, a Pegasus, a dragon, a swan, carried on the Saint’s back in its Cloth box (the Pandora box of the toys and early chapters). Armour that is also an icon: displayable, collectible, unmistakable.
Chrome from Sorayama
The look, polished plate over a dark undersuit, descends from Hajime Sorayama’s Sexy Robot illustrations of 1983, filtered through Greek myth. No other battle manga of 1986 gleamed like this, which is precisely why Kurumada chose it after a cancelled series in plain clothes.
Damage as narrative
Cloths crack, shatter and are repaired, upgraded and reborn across the arcs, Bronze to Gold-touched to the God Cloths of the finale. The armour keeps the story’s score: you can read a Saint’s whole history in the state of his Cloth.

THE RANKS

Bronze, Silver, Gold
Bronze
The rank of the five heroes: Pegasus, Dragon, Cygnus, Andromeda, Phoenix. The weakest armour, the strongest Cosmo, the series’ whole argument in one contradiction.
Silver
The Sanctuary’s envoys and assassins, a rank the story uses for tragedy as much as threat.
Gold
The twelve of the zodiac, the wall the Bronze Saints must climb temple by temple. In every era of the franchise, the Gold Cloths are the icons: the covers, the figures, the games all lead with gold.
