What are the Kingdom Hearts HD collections?
The collections exist because of the Final Mix problem: by 2012 the best versions of most Kingdom Hearts games had never left Japan, and the series was scattered across six machines. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX (PlayStation 3, Japan March 14, 2013; North America that September) answered with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, the Re:Chain of Memories remake, and a film of 358/2 Days. HD 2.5 ReMIX (2014) followed with Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and a film of Re:coded. HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PlayStation 4, January 2017) closed the set with Dream Drop Distance HD, the new 0.2 episode, and the χ Back Cover film.
The naming is Nomura’s arithmetic, explained by the director himself: Dream Drop Distance counts as 2.6, the χ games as 0, Birth by Sleep as 0.1, so its sequel episode is 0.2, and 2.6 plus 0.2 makes 2.8. The collections then began to collect themselves. The PlayStation 4 combined 1.5 and 2.5 onto one disc in March 2017; North America received The Story So Far in October 2018 and the All-in-One Package, adding Kingdom Hearts III, in March 2020.
The modern era is a platform ladder. The collections reached Xbox One in February 2020, PC via the Epic Games Store on March 30, 2021, Nintendo Switch as cloud versions in February 2022, and Steam on June 13, 2024, where the all-in bundle took the name Integrum Masterpiece and Kingdom Hearts III buyers received a Steam-blue Keyblade, Dead of Night. In June 2026 Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III], native PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows versions of the whole set, released October 8, 2026, twenty-four years after the first game and on its sixth hardware generation.
