What has Eiichiro Oda said about the ending of One Piece?

No question in manga attracts more fog than this one, so this page does one thing only: it lines up what Eiichiro Oda has actually said, in the order he said it, at the weight each statement can carry. His position on the destination has never changed. His estimates of the distance have never once been right. Fan theories about what the treasure is or how the last chapter reads are not in here. They are labelled for what they are, at the end.
THE FIXED POINT
DocumentedTo Shonen Jump Alpha, Oda put it as plainly as it can be put: "I only have the ending of One Piece in my mind, and nothing else. But knowing the end point, I weave the story and make story arcs that build up to it." On Fuji TV's Honma dekka!? in January 2019, as Anime News Network reported, he added the surrounding facts: the ending is "near," the manga will run to just over 100 volumes, he had thought about the ending since he was still in college, and if a fan ever guessed the exact ending he is writing, he would change it. An early interview from 1999 is often quoted for the strongest version of the claim, that the last panel is already decided and drawn in his mind's eye; this page carries that as reported, one tier below the statements above.
THE TREASURE IS REAL
Documented, in his own metaphorThe one content claim Oda has made about the ending is a negative, and he made it forcefully. Asked on Fuji TV in 2019 whether the One Piece might be something immaterial, like friendship or the journey itself, he answered: "No, I hate that kind of thing. That's like the ending of The Wizard of Oz, which I watched when I was a kid. Adventuring that long, and having the adventure itself be the treasure, is really dissatisfying... I've gone on this long adventure, so give me the treasure!" Whatever waits at the end of the story, on his own record it is a thing, not a moral.
THE MOVING DATES
Documented, and all missedThe original plan was five years in total. He said it inside his own work, in the Volume 42 SBS in 2006: "Originally, my plan was that One Piece would continue for five years. I've always had the climax in my head from the start... But my original estimates were a bit short." In September 2019, hosting the YouTubers Fischer's at his home, he revived the same number as a target: "I want to end it in five years," as Anime News Network reported at the time. That pointed at 2024. Instead, June 2022 brought a one month break to prepare the final saga, which began on July 25, 2022, and the final saga is still running. The pattern is now itself a document: the saga is final, and it is long.
THE SECRET, SEALED
March 2026The most recent statement is not a statement at all. To commemorate 600 million copies in March 2026, Shueisha announced that Oda had written down the secret of what the One Piece is, in his own hand, for the first time. The top half of the sheet, its heading, was printed in two national newspapers. The bottom half, the truth itself, was placed in a treasure chest and sunk to the bottom of the ocean, to be made public after the story is completed. As a piece of evidence about the ending, it is the strongest kind: the answer exists, on paper, in one place, and its author has arranged for nobody, including himself in public, to read it early.
WHAT THIS PAGE DOES NOT PRINT
Tier 2, labelledEverything else you have heard is fan work or entertainment reporting, and this page labels it Tier 2: theories naming the treasure, timelines stitched together from interviews, and the periodic reports that Oda has promised a specific number of remaining years, most recently a reported "at least four more years" said to come from One Piece Day in August 2026. That report may prove true. It does not sit in the publisher record this page rests on, so it is carried here as a report, not a fact. When Shueisha or Oda puts a date on the ending in the documented record, this page will print it in the top section, where it belongs.
