What is a Kingdom Hearts Final Mix version?
A Final Mix is an expanded Japanese re-release of a Kingdom Hearts game: more bosses, more story, new difficulty, released only in Japan on the PlayStation 2. The first one explains the whole tradition. Kingdom Hearts launched in Japan in March 2002. The North American release that September was not a straight port: it carried additions the Japanese original never had, including three extra bosses. So in December 2002, Square re-imported its own game. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, released December 26, 2002, gave Japanese players the American additions, and then kept going.
The additions were substantial. A cloaked Unknown boss, later revealed as Xemnas, waits in Hollow Bastion. Existing Heartless return in new palettes alongside entirely new ones. A new Proud difficulty mode raises the stakes, three more Ansem Reports (11 to 13) deepen the lore, and the secret movie, Another Side, Another Story, was extended into the extended cut fans call Deep Dive. The package even kept the English voice acting with Japanese subtitles, treating the American version's performances as the definitive ones.
America, meanwhile, never got it, at least not on the PS2. The Final Mix content only reached the West inside the HD collections, starting with HD 1.5 ReMIX on PlayStation 3 in 2013, eleven years later. Director Tetsuya Nomura has been candid about the gap, saying in interview that his only regret was never releasing Kingdom Hearts Final Mix overseas. The tradition he started, Japan-only deluxe editions of games the West already owned, ran for a decade before the collections closed it.
THE TWO JAPANESE BOXES

The Platinum Limited is the collector's tell for this release: if the box is silver, it is the limited edition, and the extras, not the disc, are what the premium buys.
