What is Kingdom Hearts Dark Road?
Kingdom Hearts Dark Road launched worldwide on June 22, 2020, as a standalone game living inside the Union χ app, which was rebranded Kingdom Hearts Union χ Dark Road to hold it. It is the Xehanort origin the main games had withheld for eighteen years: the boy from Destiny Islands taken to Scala ad Caelum, training beside Eraqus under Master Odin, in a class of young wielders whose fates the saga’s future depends on. Its battles are card-driven, built for short sessions, and its story is told in episodes that arrived across two years.
Its production history is unlike anything else in the series. When Union χ’s online service ended in June 2021, Dark Road was only partway through its story, and the game became unplayable during the transition, its plot suspended mid-sentence while Square Enix rebuilt it as an offline title. The finale arrived on August 26, 2022, as version 5.0.0 of the app: the concluding chapters, including the class’s tragedy and the figure of Baldr, released into a game with no servers, no purchases, and no audience metrics left to serve.
That makes Dark Road the strangest artifact in the saga: a live-service game completed as an act of archival duty. It answers the series’ oldest question, how Xehanort became Xehanort, and since the app’s delisting in August 2024 it can no longer be downloaded at all. The Dark Seeker Saga’s final chapter is a file on the phones of the players who stayed.
