What was Kingdom Hearts Union χ?
Kingdom Hearts χ began as a Japanese browser game in July 2013, a card-driven RPG set in the age of fairy tales, centuries before Sora: the era of the Foretellers, the five Unions, and the Keyblade War that the console games treat as ancient catastrophe. It moved to phones as Unchained χ (Japan 2015, worldwide 2016), was relaunched in April 2017 as Union χ [Cross] with multiplayer and a second story season, and in June 2020 absorbed a second full game, Dark Road, under the combined name Kingdom Hearts Union χ Dark Road. The browser original had already closed in September 2016, ending with a browser-only finale called “Unchained 0.”
No other Kingdom Hearts game carries this much irreplaceable story. The Master of Masters, the Foretellers, Ephemer, Skuld, Strelitzia, the Dandelions, and the truth of the Keyblade War exist as playable narrative only here; the console games reference this era constantly, χ Back Cover films its leadership, and Kingdom Hearts IV opens with a Union χ character, Strelitzia, in its first trailer. For eight years the foundation of the saga was a free-to-play phone game.
The end was handled better than most. Announced on February 25, 2021, the final story update landed in Japan on May 31, 2021, and online service ended that June. Rather than vanish, the app converted into an offline version: a theater mode preserving every cutscene, alongside character and Keyblade customization records. Dark Road’s finale followed in the same app in August 2022. Then, in August 2024, the app was delisted from all storefronts: anyone who kept it owns the archive; anyone who did not cannot legally obtain the Keyblade War.
