What is Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater?

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the 2004 PlayStation 2 prequel set in a 1964 Soviet jungle, where the soldier who will become Big Boss must kill his own mentor, The Boss, and learns the series' founding tragedy.

Released in North America in November 2004 and in Japan that December, Snake Eater stepped back to the Cold War: operative Naked Snake parachutes into Tselinoyarsk to rescue a scientist, is betrayed by his mentor The Boss, who defects with a nuclear armed tank, the Shagohod, and returns weeks later to clean up the operation in a mission whose real purpose is hidden even from him. The ending is widely held as the series' emotional peak.

The systems went feral in the best way: camouflage indices, hunting animals for food, treating wounds by hand in a survival viewer, and stamina driven play replaced the radar assisted corridors of Shadow Moses. Boss fights became legends, above all The End, an elderly sniper duel across three forest maps that famously can be resolved by waiting, sniping early, or setting the console clock forward until he dies of old age.

Snake Eater's first release had a fixed camera inherited from the earlier games, and the 2005 Subsistence edition answered the criticism with a full free camera, an online mode, ports of the two MSX2 games and a disc of re-edited cutscenes. Subsistence is the version history kept: its second disc is how most of the West first legally played Metal Gear 2.

The physical family is wide: standard and Subsistence editions in every region, a Japanese premium package, the HD Collection versions, the Nintendo 3DS port with its own case and circle pad support, and now Delta as a separate remake with its own page in this shelf. Covers differ by region, with Yoji Shinkawa's ink work carrying the Japanese identity most strongly.

Printed guides for Snake Eater were substantial in both Japan and the West, and the Subsistence guides are the ones to pair with the free camera version; the Japanese complete guides add camouflage and Kerotan frog location data that completionists still use. The strategy layer is not decoration on this game, because its systems were deliberately opaque.
