What is Spy x Family Code: White?
Spy x Family Code: White is the series' first film, released in Japanese theaters on December 22, 2023. It is an original story, not an adaptation of manga chapters: the Forgers travel to the snowy region of Frigis so Anya can learn a pastry for an Eden Academy cooking contest, and walk into a military conspiracy. Tatsuya Endo supervised the production and provided original character designs, while the screenplay is by Ichiro Okouchi and the director is Takashi Katagiri, with the television cast reprising their roles and Tomoya Nakamura and Kento Kaku voicing the film's villains.
The Japanese run was the series' commercial peak on screen. The film opened at number one, selling 866,000 tickets for ¥1.224 billion (about $8.6 million at the time) in its first three days, and closed its Japanese theatrical run at ¥6.32 billion, about $40.2 million at the time, the fourth-highest gross for a Japanese film of 2024. It reached North American theaters on April 19, 2024.
Its most collectible artifact is paper. Early Japanese audiences received the Code: White Film File, a limited booklet printed in a run of four million copies containing an original eight-page manga by Endo, interviews with Endo, the staff and the cast, and a cover drawn by Endo himself. A second wave of audiences received AR illustration cards he drew, which unlocked a talking 3D Anya when scanned. The novelization, by Family Portrait author Aya Yajima, was published the same day the film opened.
