Where did the Moonlight Sword come from?

From the first King’s Field in 1994, where it was already the strongest sword in the game, hidden at the bottom of the design.

In King’s Field (1994) the Moonlight Sword is a secret with a procedure: carry the Dragon Sword to the fairy Milia on the fifth floor of the Royal Cemetery, and she awakens it into the strongest weapon in the game. It already fires its signature attack, a wave of light released by pressing the magic button in time with a swing, with no spell equipped. In this first form it is a one-handed sword, about 120 centimeters, blue-green and glowing. The greatsword it later becomes was still ten years of sequels away.

The lore the series built around it is a creation myth. The god Vallad split into two dragons: Seath the White Dragon and Guyra the Black Dragon. Guyra forged the Moonlight Sword to gather warriors for his own revival, telling them the blade held half his spirit; Seath answered with a dark counterpart, the Dark Slayer. King’s Field II is the sword’s theft and recovery, though the blade Aleph actually fights with is the Dark Slayer, and he regains the Moonlight Sword only at the ending. In III the sword is shattered and restored, and in both III and IV the ending itself turns on whether you hold it.

THE AFTERLIFE

One sword, every era
Armored Core
The other long-running FromSoftware series carries the blade as the Moonlight laser blade, a top-tier energy weapon from the 1997 original through Armored Core VI’s IA-C01W2 MOONLIGHT in 2023.
The cameos
Polygon’s survey of the sword’s appearances counts 29 across the studio’s catalogue, including the action games Otogi and Ninja Blade, where it hides as an unlockable. The tradition survived the studio’s obscure years intact.
The Souls era
Demon's Souls fields the Large Sword of Moonlight, a blade of pure energy that ignores shields. Dark Souls lets you cut the Moonlight Greatsword from the tail of Seath the Scaleless, another white dragon named Seath. Bloodborne builds a boss around the Holy Moonlight Sword; Elden Ring renames the tradition the Dark Moon Greatsword.
The exception
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the famous FromSoftware game with no Moonlight Sword, a deliberate break noted in every survey of the tradition. Inside the family itself, Shadow Tower and Eternal Ring never carried it either.
