Who illustrated the Record of Lodoss War novels?

Yutaka Izubuchi: the first face of Lodoss was drawn by a mecha designer.

The paintings and drawings that introduced Lodoss to readers belong to Yutaka Izubuchi, better known to anime fans as a mechanical designer (Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, Patlabor). Izubuchi illustrated the replay paperbacks and all seven original novels plus the 1995 side-story collections, giving Mizuno’s campaign a printed face years before the anime existed.

He was not the franchise’s only illustrator. Akihiro Yamada painted the prequel Legend of Lodoss novels and the Lady of Pharis manga; Masato Natsumoto illustrated the 1998 second edition of The Black Knight; Haruhiko Mikimoto worked on Next Generation; and Hidari illustrates the current Crown of the Covenant. The confusion is common, because Yamada’s painterly Lodoss is so strong. The original seven, though, are Izubuchi’s.

IZUBUCHI’S LODOSS

Print, 1989 to 1995
The replay paperbacks
Izubuchi’s covers sold the campaign logs as literature from 1989: armored knights and painted skies over what were, inside, transcripts of a game.
The seven novels
His Deedlit, blonde, green-cloaked, and fine-featured, is the elf of the printed page, distinct from Nobuteru Yuki’s anime design that the West met first.
A designer’s fantasy
Izubuchi approached Lodoss as a design problem: crests, armor construction, and a consistent visual grammar for an island that had to feel built, not decorated.
