Who is Akihiro Yamada?

The watercolorist: Yamada’s Lodoss is painted in washes, mist, and gold.

Akihiro Yamada came to Lodoss through its prehistory. When Mizuno novelized the Legend of Lodoss replays, the five-volume prequel series (1994 to 2002) set a thousand years before Parn, Yamada painted its illustrations: loose, luminous watercolor work, all weather and atmosphere, that stands apart from Izubuchi’s precise line. He also drew, rather than merely illustrated, the manga The Lady of Pharis.

Beyond Lodoss, Yamada is one of the defining Japanese fantasy illustrators of his generation, the cover artist of the Twelve Kingdoms novels and a character designer on RahXephon. His Lodoss work is where many Japanese readers first met his brush.

YAMADA’S LODOSS

1991 to 2002
The Lady of Pharis · manga, 1991–2001
Yamada drawing a full manga: the story of the priestess Flaus and the founding generation of Lodoss’s kingdoms, serialized first in Marukatsu PC Engine and completed in The Sneaker. Two volumes.
Legend of Lodoss · novels, 1994–2002
Five volumes and an extra, illustrated throughout by Yamada. The prequel’s older, stranger Lodoss suits his mist-and-gold palette exactly.
The style itself
Yamada paints fantasy as landscape first: figures emerge from wash and weather. On a shelf of sharp-lined 1990s fantasy art, his covers are the ones that glow.

COLLECTING YAMADA’S LODOSS

Editions
English Lady of Pharis
Central Park Media’s CPM Manga published The Lady of Pharis in English; the Japanese second edition under Newtype 100% Comics is the fuller presentation of his art.
What to verify
Lady of Pharis exists in editions with different imprints (Dragon Comics for the first volume’s first edition, Newtype 100% Comics for the second). Match imprint to volume before assuming a set is uniform.
The novels as art books
For Yamada’s Lodoss painting at its best, the Legend of Lodoss paperbacks are the affordable original: five volumes of his illustrations in their first context.
