Who Is Kamui Fujiwara?

The manga artist Enix trusted with the face of its creation story.

Kamui Fujiwara is a Japanese manga artist best known to game players for two Enix jobs. In manga, he drew Dragon Quest: Emblem of Roto (Roto no Monshō), the long-running Dragon Quest comic. In games, he was the character designer of Terranigma in 1995, creating Ark, Elle, and the demon Yomi, and illustrating the gamebook that Enix published alongside the cartridge.

His connection to the game did not end at release. When Japanese fans launched a petition in July 2021 asking for a re-release or remaster of Terranigma, Fujiwara publicly backed it, alongside co-composer Miyoko Kobayashi. Reporting on that campaign carried his most quoted line on the subject: Quintet president Tomoyoshi Miyazaki had, to his knowledge, "disappeared," which he believed was why the rights to republish the game had become so complicated.

The campaign worked, slowly. When the re-release was announced in August 2026, Fujiwara was named as a returning contributor, providing new key artwork and additional in-game designs. The artist who gave the game its faces in 1995 is drawing for it again in its thirty-first year.

THE WORK

Manga and games
Dragon Quest: Emblem of Roto
Fujiwara's signature manga: the Emblem of Roto saga, drawn for Enix's Gangan line. It is the credit Japanese sources reach for first when introducing him, ahead of the game work.
Terranigma, 1995
Character designer. Ark's design carries one famous production quirk fans still patch around: his hair reads differently in art and in sprite, and a fan compilation restores the blue haired Ark. See the fan patches.
The gamebook
Enix's Terranigma merchandise line included a gamebook featuring Fujiwara's artwork, one of several printed companions that never left Japan. See the books page.

THE RETURN

2021 to 2027
The petition, 2021
A fan-led effort, backed by Fujiwara and co-composer Miyoko Kobayashi, asking Square Enix for a re-release or remaster. It restarted public reporting on who, if anyone, could still say yes to a Terranigma revival.
The interview
Nintendo Life interviewed Fujiwara in August 2021 about the drive to resurrect the game, the fullest English-language account of his side of the story.
New art, 2026
Announced with the re-release: new key artwork and additional in-game designs by Fujiwara, with original director Tomoyoshi Miyazaki and writer Reiko Takebayashi also involved in the project.
