Who is Goro Majima?

The eyepatch is real, the madness is half performance, and the tragedy underneath it is the best writing in the series.

Goro Majima enters the 2005 game as a shrieking, knife-happy captain who calls Kiryu "Kiryu-chan" and seems to exist purely to interrupt him. Twenty years of games have slowly revealed the architecture under the act: a man who chose the mad-dog persona after the underworld destroyed his sworn brother and took his eye, and who is, by common consent of the fanbase, the series' most beloved character.

THE REVELATION

What Zero did
The manager of the Grand
Yakuza 0 (set 1988) casts a 24-year-old Majima as the impeccably polite, ponytail-wearing manager of a Sotenbori cabaret, working under surveillance and forbidden to return to the Tojo Clan. Watching courtesy curdle into the Mad Dog across forty hours is the prequel's whole argument.
Majima Everywhere
Kiwami (2016) rebuilt the first game around him: a system where Majima ambushes Kiryu from traffic cones, manholes and dance floors to re-teach him his fighting styles, equal parts boss fight and running gag.
The Hamill footnote
In the 2006 English dub Majima was voiced by Mark Hamill, who has since said he does not remember the role at all. His Japanese voice, Hidenari Ugaki, has never missed a game.
His own game, at last
After two decades as the series' second man, Majima headlined Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii (2025), washing up amnesiac on a Hawaiian shore and captaining a pirate ship. The Mad Dog outlived the hierarchy that made him.
