Why is Mushishi volume 8/9/10 so expensive?

Because it was the only way to finish the series, and almost none were kept.

Del Rey published Mushishi in English from 2007 to 2010 as single volumes for volumes 1 to 7. Volumes 8, 9 and 10 were never sold separately in English print. They exist in print only inside one combined final volume, released in July 2010, wearing the Japanese volume 10 cover art.

That combined book was the last Mushishi Del Rey printed, in the smallest numbers, right before the imprint closed. The entire English print run then went out of print, and for fifteen years every collector building a set had to find this one book. Demand concentrated on a single bottleneck volume is what makes a price like this.

Current asks tell the story plainly. These are active eBay asks checked on November 2, 2026, asking prices, not sold results: the combined 8/9/10 volume at $329.99, complete English sets clustered between $540 and $926, while complete Japanese sets ask only $59 to $99.

There is a relief valve now, and it is recent. Kodansha's omnibus Collector's Edition began rolling out in English on November 4, 2025, with the run due to complete in mid-2027. It is the first official alternative to the Del Rey bottleneck. Digitally, the full series has been available in English from Kodansha since 2014, all ten volumes, as singles.

THE ENGLISH COVERS

Same watercolors, English trade dress

Del Rey never commissioned new art: every English cover is the Japanese watercolor under English lettering, and the combined 8/9/10 wears the Japanese volume 10 illustration. Shown below are the English covers that survive in clean scans: volumes 1, 2, 3 and 7, and the combined final volume. The volume 4 cover survives only in a thumbnail too small to present honestly, and no usable scans of volumes 5 and 6 could be sourced at all. The Japanese and Collector's Edition rows above carry the art in full.
