The Weapon Triangle and Durability

Swords beat axes. Axes beat lances. Lances beat swords. Everything after is thirty years of footnotes.

The weapon triangle is Fire Emblem's rock-paper-scissors grammar, introduced in Genealogy of the Holy War in 1996, and its partner system, the trinity of magic, arrived in the same game. Beside them runs the series' other great weapon rule, durability: nearly every weapon you own is quietly counting down to breaking. This page documents all three systems and how later games bent them.

THE TRIANGLE

Introduced 1996, stable for two decades

With advantage, a unit gains accuracy against its prey and loses it against its predator; in some games the swing extends to damage. The design purpose is legibility: a glance at an enemy's weapon tells you who should fight them, turning an army of stats into a set of matchups the player can plan around. The Fire Emblem Wiki's weapon triangle article records that the system remained mostly unchanged until Fates, an unusual two-decade stability for a series that reinvents itself constantly.

THE TRINITY OF MAGIC

Two smaller triangles
Fire, wind, thunder
The anima triangle, introduced with the weapon triangle in Genealogy: fire is stronger than wind, wind stronger than thunder, thunder stronger than fire.
Anima, light, dark
From The Binding Blade through Radiant Dawn, a second triangle sat above the first: anima is stronger than light, light stronger than darkness, darkness stronger than anima.
The last appearance
Radiant Dawn (2007) is the last mainline game to divide tomes into separate schools, and so the last home of the trinity of magic. Later games fold magic into single tome classes, and the second triangle quietly lapses.
Fates reorganizes
Fates (2015) rebuilt the triangle by color, folding nearly every weapon in: swords and tomes beat axes and bows, axes and bows beat lances and shurikens, lances and shurikens beat swords and tomes. Heroes adopted the same colors, plus colorless weapons outside the triangle entirely.

THE MODERN SETTLEMENT

Lapsed, then weaponized

Three Houses largely let the triangle lapse, surviving mainly as the Breaker skills that counter one weapon type. Engage (2023) brought advantage back with a new job: instead of bending accuracy, advantage on the attack now breaks the enemy, leaving them unable to counterattack. The thirty-year-old triangle survives by changing what it pays out.

DURABILITY

The breaking point

Weapons wearing out is older than the triangle: it is in the 1990 original, and it is the quiet engine of the series' economy, turning inventories into budgets. Genealogy softened it with repair shops, letting prized and legendary weapons be restored rather than replaced, which suited a game about inherited arms. Fates abolished breaking outright, replacing it with trade-offs: stronger weapons now tax their wielder's stats instead of their lifespan. Three Houses restored durability and bound it to Combat Arts, and Engage settled between the poles, with most weapons unbreakable and staves still limited. The argument between the two designs, scarcity against freedom, is one the series is still having with itself.
