How was Halo released in Japan?

Late, well reviewed, and into a market that never came.

The original Xbox sold under half a million units in Japan in its entire life. Halo arrived two months after the console, dropped its subtitle, scored 33/40 in Famitsu, and still became the platform's third best-selling game in the country.

The console

473,000 machines

The original Xbox launched in Japan on February 22, 2002 at 34,800 yen, sold about 124,000 units in its first three days, and collapsed within weeks. Lifetime Japanese sales, by Famitsu's count, were 472,992 units, roughly 2 percent of the platform's 24 million worldwide. The console was perceived as bulky, its launch software skewed Western, and momentum never recovered. Halo arrived into that market two months after the hardware.

Combat Evolved

Number three on the platform

Halo reached Japan on April 25, 2002, published by Microsoft at 6,800 yen, with the subtitle dropped: the box and Japanese coverage call it simply HALO. Famitsu scored it 33/40. It sold 31,041 copies in its first week and 76,963 lifetime, making it the third best-selling original Xbox game in Japan, behind only Dead or Alive 3 and Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. On a tiny installed base, Halo was proportionally a flagship. The audience was just tiny.

Halo 2 and Halo 3

Prestige, not scale

Halo 2 followed on November 11, 2004 at 7,140 yen: 29,235 first week, 45,917 lifetime, eighth on the platform, with Famitsu scores of 34/40 in Weekly Famitsu and 37/40 in the dedicated Famitsu Xbox magazine. Halo 3, on the Xbox 360, changed the prestige: released September 27, 2007, it debuted at number one on the Japanese chart, the first Xbox 360 exclusive ever to top it, with Famitsu scoring it 37/40 and calling it the best FPS in the Japanese console market. But its absolute numbers stayed in the same band, and the 360's Japanese top ten still belonged to JRPGs. The 360 era changed Halo's standing in Japan, not its scale.

The budget editions

Platinum Collection

Japan's budget line kept the series in print for years. Halo's Platinum Collection edition arrived October 23, 2003, in the traditional green Xbox case most Japanese Platinum titles used. Halo 3's Platinum Collection followed in February 2009, with a further New Price reissue in 2013. A separate Halo History Pack bundled Halo and Halo 2 together in 2007. For collectors, these Japanese editions are distinct objects from the American Platinum Hits line, starting with the box art, which the covers page in this library compares.
