What is My Hero Academia: School Briefs?

The franchise in prose: school days the manga had no panels for.

My Hero Academia: School Briefs, in Japanese Yuei Hakusho, is a light-novel series written by Anri Yoshi and published under Shueisha’s Jump J-Books line. The first volume appeared on 4 April 2016, the week the anime premiered, and six volumes were out by October 2021. Where the manga races from crisis to crisis, the novels stop and live in the school: dorm life, festivals, training days, and the quiet scenes between battles, with illustrations by Horikoshi.

Viz publishes the series in English. Yoshi also wrote the prose adaptations of the films, one novel per movie from Two Heroes to You’re Next, so the franchise’s whole light-novel shelf, briefs and film books alike, comes from a single pen. A drama CD was bundled with the limited edition of manga volume 7, with an original Horikoshi story scripted by Yosuke Kuroda, part of the same prose-and-audio margin.

THE BOOKS

Six volumes · 2016 to 2021
The imprint
Jump J-Books, Shueisha’s light-novel line: the franchise’s prose home from the anime’s first week onward.
The premise
Short stories of U.A. daily life, slotted between the manga’s arcs: the school as a place to live, not just a stage for fights.
In English
All six volumes licensed and published by Viz, keeping the English prose shelf complete alongside the film novels.

THE AUTHOR’S OTHER FRANCHISE WORK

One pen, two shelves
The film novels
Anri Yoshi novelized all four films, a book per premiere: Two Heroes, Heroes Rising, World Heroes’ Mission, You’re Next.
The manga twins
Each film also received a one-volume manga adaptation from Homesha. The collector who wants a film on paper has two different books to find.
The supervision
Horikoshi illustrates and oversees the prose line; the novels are canon-adjacent school life, written to fit inside his timeline, not against it.
