The History of Lunar

Thirty-three years, two stories, and a fan base that carried them between every rescue.

Lunar's history falls into three acts. In the first, Game Arts and Studio Alex invent the series on Mega-CD (1992 to 1994) and Working Designs makes it a Western cult object. In the second, the stories are rebuilt for Saturn and PlayStation (1996 to 2000) while the deluxe box becomes the series' Western signature. In the third, Lunar survives on handheld retellings, a divisive DS prequel, and a long quiet, until GungHo, Game Arts' parent since the 2000s, restores both classics in the Lunar Remastered Collection of April 18, 2025.

ACT ONE: THE MEGA-CD YEARS

1992 to 1995
1992: The Silver Star
June 26 in Japan, December 1993 in North America. The best-selling Mega-CD game in Japan, built to prove that a CD could carry animation, voice, and song. Its success made Game Arts an RPG house.
1994: Eternal Blue
December 22 in Japan, September 1995 in the West. The sequel jumps a thousand years, darkens the palette, and pushes the Mega-CD to some sixty animated sequences. In Japan the box tucked in a bonus mini-CD of songs and character skits.
1996: Walking School
The Game Gear gaiden (January 12, 1996) shrinks Lunar to a magic school and three students. Small, warm, and Japan-only: the series' quietest branch begins.

ACT TWO: THE REMAKES

1996 to 2002
1996 to 1999: Silver Star Story
The remake most of the West knows: Saturn (1996, MPEG edition 1997), PlayStation in Japan (1998), and Working Designs' four-disc collector's edition in North America (May 28, 1999), which sold over 223,000 copies in its first year and earned a Greatest Hits reissue.
1997 to 2000: Magic School and Eternal Blue Complete
Magic School Lunar! expands Walking School on Saturn (1997). Eternal Blue Complete follows (Saturn 1998, PlayStation 1999), reaching North America in December 2000 with a pendant-and-standees box. A Windows port of Silver Star Story appears in Japan and Korea (1999), and Lunar Legend retells the first story on Game Boy Advance (2002).
2005: two endings
Lunar: Dragon Song opens the DS era as the first new chapter in a decade (August/September 2005) to a cold reception. In December, Working Designs closes its doors, and the series loses the publisher that had been its Western voice for twelve years.

ACT THREE: THE KEEPING

2009 to 2025
2009: Harmony
GungHo remakes Silver Star once more for PSP, with a Four Heroes prologue and a new translation; Xseed publishes it in North America in March 2010. The 1992 story, redrawn a third time, still finds its audience.
2012 to 2022: the story goes pocket and mini
Silver Star Story Touch brings the PlayStation version to phones (iOS 2012, Android 2024). In 2022, Sega's Mega Drive Mini 2 includes both Mega-CD originals in Japan: the series' first hardware, honored in miniature.
2025: the Remastered Collection
Announced by GungHo in September 2024 and released April 18, 2025, the collection restores both PlayStation remakes with new English voices, Classic and Remastered modes, and new Kubooka art: the designer's hand on the series, thirty-three years after he first drew it.
