Trails in the Sky: the first chapter, documented

A quiet game about two teenagers walking across a small kingdom, and the first page of a 13-game novel.

The Legend of Heroes VI: Trails in the Sky was released for Japanese PCs on June 24, 2004, and ported to PSP in 2006. It follows Estelle Bright and her adopted brother Joshua, apprentice bracers, licensed do-gooders of the Bracer Guild, travelling the kingdom of Liberl to earn their full credentials, in a country still living in the shadow of the Hundred Days War and fifty years into the orbal revolution that powers its airships, lamps and battle orbments. Falcom built it as the first half of one large story: its ending is a cliffhanger of unusual cruelty, answered by SC two years later.

The game's English life was nearly as dramatic as its plot. XSEED acquired the trilogy in 2010 and released the PSP edition in North America in March 2011, then discovered the scale of what it had bought: a script of roughly 1.5 million Japanese characters, more text than most visual novels, driven by Falcom's rule that nearly every NPC is named and re-written after every story beat. Editor Jessica Chavez spent nine months on the script, working days of eleven-plus hours, six days a week, with localisation specialist Thomas Lipschultz reinforcing the final month. The PC original followed in English in 2014. The full account of that localisation is on its own page; the game itself now exists in a 2025 remake that serves as the modern front door.
