What Is Quest Mode in Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution?

A tour of imaginary arcades, against opponents whose styles were copied from real champions.

Evolution replaced the original game's Kumite ladder with something stranger and more personal. In Quest mode you are not role playing as Akira or Sarah. You are a player, with your own name and customized fighter, traveling from arcade to arcade and entering their tournaments, which is exactly what the game's best Japanese players did for a living.

HOW IT PLAYS

Arcades, money, and borrowed styles
You, not the fighter
The concept inverts the usual campaign: the character is your avatar in the arcade world, and the journey between venues is the story.
A circuit of arcades
Each fictional arcade hosts tournaments and regulars of rising strength, giving the single player game a geography and a ladder with faces on it.
Real styles, captured
Sega took top tournament players from the arcade version and programmed their play styles into the AI, so two opponents using the same character fight noticeably differently.
The item economy
Wins pay out money for cosmetic customization, over 1,500 items deep in Evolution, so your fighter's appearance becomes a record of your tour.
A name of your own
Players name their fighter and build an identity across the circuit, an early console version of the player card culture of Japanese arcades.

WHY IT MATTERED

The arcade, preserved

Quest mode is a documentary disguised as a campaign. It preserved, on a $20 disc, the social structure of the Japanese arcade scene at its peak: the venues, the regulars, the recognizable styles, the slow climb. Single player modes in later fighters, with their tours, licenses, and style mimicking rivals, are working from its blueprint.
