Why Did Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution Launch at a Budget Price?
It was not discounted. It was born discounted: in America, Evolution only ever existed as a Greatest Hits release.
Most game revisions launch at full price and fall. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution inverted the pattern in North America, and the reason is a quirk of Sony's budget program colliding with Sega's release timing.
THE FACTS
How the $20 launch happenedThe original earned it
The 2002 PlayStation 2 Virtua Fighter 4 sold and scored well enough to qualify for Sony's Greatest Hits budget range, which it entered in late 2002.
The revision arrived after
Evolution reached Japanese arcades in August 2002 and Japanese PlayStation 2 in March 2003, an improved edition: Goh and Brad Burns added, every other fighter adjusted, Quest mode in place of Kumite.
America skipped a step
For the North American launch on 12 August 2003, Sega released Evolution only as part of the Greatest Hits budget range. There was no full price American edition to discount from.
$20 on day one
GameSpy's review states it plainly: Evolution "debuts at that sweet $20 price point, making it an unmissable value," and noted it arrived two weeks before SoulCalibur II at full price.
What the $20 bought
A game holding a 93 Metacritic average, an expanded roster of 15, and over 1,500 cosmetic items in Quest mode: reviewers treated the price as part of the review.
Japan paid normally
The budget debut was an American structure, not a judgment on the game: Japan had received Evolution as a standard release months earlier.
WHY IT WORKED
The budget line as a launchpadThe move read as confidence rather than clearance. The Greatest Hits banner told late adopters the original had already proven itself, and the $20 tag put the deepest fighter on the console within impulse reach of the SoulCalibur II crowd arriving that same month. Evolution is still cited in value discussions of the era for exactly this reason: it is the rare revision remembered partly for its price, and fondly.
