Are My Hero Academia covers the same in Japanese and English?

Same paintings, different dressing: Viz changed everything except the art.

Yes. Across all 42 volumes, the English editions of My Hero Academia use the same cover paintings Horikoshi drew for the Japanese originals. What Viz rebuilt is the furniture around them: the logo is redrawn in English, the Jump Comics banner becomes a Shonen Jump Comics badge with the volume number, the author’s name is romanised, and the Japanese title text worked into the art is removed or replaced.

The pairs below open and close the run. The full Japanese set is on the gallery page, and the English publication story is on the editions page.

THE OPENING PAIR

Volume 1 · 2014 and 2015

Volume 1, twice

Same painting · two trade dresses
My Hero Academia volume 1 Japanese cover
Jump Comics · 2014Japanese logo lettering over the art; the volume number sits inside the painting.
My Hero Academia volume 1 English cover
Viz Media · 2015English logo, Shonen Jump Comics badge at the top left, KOHEI HORIKOSHI in roman letters.

Nothing in the painting moves. Deku, All Might, and the red crowd are pixel-for-pixel the same image; only the words changed.

THE CLOSING PAIR

Volume 42 · 2024 and 2025

Volume 42, twice

The bookend, in both languages
My Hero Academia volume 42 Japanese cover
Jump Comics · 2024The yellow finale as Japan printed it, December 2024.
My Hero Academia volume 42 English cover
Viz Media · 2025The same yellow field and cast, eleven months later.

Ten years apart in the story, eleven months apart on the shelf: the English run ends with the same image as the Japanese, which is the whole policy in one pair.

WHAT ACTUALLY DIFFERS

The fine print
The logo
The Japanese logo is hand-lettered and often interacts with the art. The English logo is a fixed masthead, set above the painting on every volume.
The badges
Japan prints the Jump Comics banner at the top right. Viz prints a small portrait badge at the top left carrying the imprint and volume number.
The rule
For this series the answer never changes: if an English cover looks different, it is the dressing, not the art. The paintings are Horikoshi’s in both languages.
