How many versions of Lunar: The Silver Star are there?

Nine releases, three full remakes, one story: Alex has been redrawn more often than almost any hero of his era.

The first Lunar exists in three distinct generations. The original (Mega-CD, 1992) is a game of stills, voices, and CD audio. Silver Star Story (Saturn 1996, PlayStation 1998) is a ground-up remake with a rewritten middle and fifty minutes of film. The handheld generation retells it twice more, as Legend (GBA, 2002) and Harmony (PSP, 2009), before the Remastered Collection (2025) settles the question by restoring the PlayStation remake itself. The tree, in order:

THE TREE

1992 to 2025
Lunar The Silver Star Sega CD box art
1 · The Silver Star
Mega-CD · June 26, 1992 (JP) · December 1993 (NA). The original. Random encounters, a Black Dragon gone mad, and Working Designs' seven disc-art stamps in the West.
2 · Silver Star Story (Saturn)
October 25, 1996 (JP only). The remake: visible enemies, Luna stays with the party, Ghaleon's motive rewritten from revenge to a twisted concern for mankind. Movies play in a quarter-screen window.
3 · Silver Star Story Complete (Saturn, MPEG)
July 4, 1997 (JP only). The same remake mastered for Sega's MPEG card: full-screen, higher-fidelity film. The version the PlayStation port chased and, on video quality, never quite caught.
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete PlayStation box art
4 · Silver Star Story Complete (PlayStation)
May 28, 1998 (JP) · May 28, 1999 (NA). The famous one: Working Designs' $60 four-disc collector's edition, 223,000 North American copies in year one, and a later Fan-Art Edition (2002) wearing fan-drawn disc art.
5 · Windows and Touch
Windows: Japan December 8, 1999, Korea 2000. A generation later, Silver Star Story Touch ported the PlayStation version (with the PSP translation and voices) to iOS in 2012 and Android in 2024: the remake as a phone app.
Lunar Silver Star Harmony PSP box art
6 · Silver Star Harmony (PSP)
2009 (JP) · March 2, 2010 (NA). Redrawn once more, isometric and bright, with a new playable prologue for Dyne and the Four Heroes, softer difficulty, and Arts Gauge limit breaks. A remake of the remake, not of 1992.
Lunar Legend Game Boy Advance box art
Also: Lunar Legend (GBA)
April 2002 (JP) · December 2002 (NA). The story compressed to a cartridge: animation gone, a trading-card side system added, and story beats shuffled in ways no other version attempts.
7 · Remastered Collection
April 18, 2025. The PlayStation remake, restored in widescreen with a Classic mode that keeps the original presentation, a new English dub, and new Kubooka cover art on the physical edition.

WHICH ONE IS 'THE' SILVER STAR?

A collector's answer
Three games wear one name
1992, 1996, and 2009 are genuinely different games sharing a plot: different dungeons, different systems, different Ghaleons. The honest census is three Silver Stars and their ports, not one game in nine boxes.
The argument that never ends
Originalists prize the Mega-CD's darker third act; the majority met Lunar through the PlayStation remake and prize its warmth. The Library takes no side: it documents the tree and lets the versions argue.
